Changing Seasons

It seems the weather has immediately jumped into Fall, and so has the Monkey Truck!  With Fall comes two of my most favorite ingredients: Pumpkins and apples.  Not just for pies anymore, we're putting these things into our juices, our milkshakes, and even our pizzas.
As a child I can remember our family trips to the apple orchards and pumpkin farms.  My brothers and I would pick out two pumpkins each- one for carving, and one for pies.   There are many memories of scooping out pumpkin "guts" and seeds, peeling apples, and making lots and lots of pies. I'm thankful for the way my Mother introduced me to canned pumpkin: "You'll never make a pumpkin pie taste right with that stuff from a can."

Below is a list of some of our Fall menu items.  Come see us at one of our events this Fall to try them:
Pumpkin Pie Milkshake
Apple Pecan Milkshake
Harvest Pizza with carmelized onions, apples, balsamic, and vegan cheddar
Butternut Squash Pizza with fresh sage & goat cheese
Pumpkin scones, apple cinnamon scones
Homebaked pies by the slice: Pumpkin, Apple, and Vegan Banana-Pecan

We'll be posting our Holiday catering menu very soon, including whole pies, baked goods, soups, and more.

Our first week... trial by fire

Our official first day of operations in the truck was incredible.  It's one thing to open a business on an ordinary day with a usual amount of traffic, it's a totally different experience to open at a huge festival with tens of thousands of people coming for one thing- to eat food from trucks and carts of all kinds.
We did a test run earlier in the week to make sure everything was working and running properly.  Good thing we, because the oven wasn't working! Fortunately it was just a safety valve that had to be reaplced.  Below are a few pics from our test run and our first day at the Columbus Food Truck & Cart Festival:
A few little monkeys hanging out in the monkey truck:
We finally managed to get the oven going and made a few pizzas:

A Huge turnout to this event!  We sold out and had to close temporarily to restock.
We had soo much fun.  And we learned a LOT from this experience.  We still have a few more tweaks and a new paint job before she is totally complete.
Our September Calendar:
Weds, 8/31: Columbus Commons Lunch on the Lawn
Saturday, 9/3: We'll be parked at Brothers Drake Meadery for Bike the Cbus during the day and later for Gallery Hop
Fri Sept 9 thru Sun Sept 11: Hot Times Festival
Saturday, Sept 17th: Independents' Day Festival
Thurs, Sept 29th: Cask Tapping at St. James Tavern
Food Truck Sundays Sept & Oct at Franklin Park Conservatory

The Monkey Truck makes it debut 8/24 & 8/26/2011

It's been several months of hard work and dedication, including a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and...a broken foot. We are excited to announce that the truck has passed its health inspection and we're ready to start bringing healthy local goodness to the streets of Columbus!
Our Big Debut comes next week Friday at Columbus Commons for the Food Truck & Cart Festival 2011.  Prior to that, we will need to do a few test runs in the truck to make sure we're ready for this big event.  That means we will be GIVING AWAY FREE FOOD & DRINKS!!!!!  Yes, giving away.  Why?  Because it takes several days for our official license paperwork to go through, we cannot actually sell food until that happens.  But we can certainly give it away!
Wednesday afternoons at Global Gallery are "Fresh Wednesdays."  In addition to live music and local food carts, there's a couple of farmers market vendors, as well as a CSA pick up at the parking lot.  We've decided that this upcoming Fresh Wednesday will be our Giveaway Day!  We've got some awesome new smoothie and juice recipes to try, and we'll also be serving up some new pizzas, fresh from our pizza oven in the truck!  The fun begins this Wednesday, August 24th, from 4pm until we run out.  We'll be giving out coupons throughout the day along with FREE PIZZAS, JUICES, & SMOOTHIES!
**Special Note: You will likely see me hobbling around on my awesome new crutches on Wednesday.  In the process of building, I fell from the roof of the truck and broke my foot.  The good news is I survived and I was lucky to have only broken my foot!  (it's pretty high up there, in case you didn't know.)  The bad news is that the broken foot has set us back a bit financially, and while the truck may be done on the inside, we are not yet done on the outside.   So, please don't judge a book by its cover!  It may be a bit ugly outside until we can get the funds to finish the paint job, but rest assured the food that comes from the inside is totally made with  tons of love and goodness.    We hope that in a few weeks the truck will be completed from head to toe.  When it is, it will look like this:

Nacho Pizza, it's MY Pizza! (And it's vegan)

In honor of Columbus's best festivals at Goodale park this year, I have decided to come up with this very special pizza: NACHO PIZZAA!!!!
It all came to mind after trying out a different kind of vegan cheese, called Teese.  Teese is made by the fabulous Chicago Soy Dairy Co.  I was at the Clintonville Co-Op one day and I spotted a package of the Spicy Nacho teese marked down, so I picked it up on a whim and made nachos with it later that night.  It was soo good I had to find a way to incorporate it into my pizzas.  Thus, nacho pizza was born.

We started with our whole grain pizza crust, and topped it with some Yves soy crumbles.  While I'm not a huge of fan of fake meat products, this one does a pretty good job of looking and tasting like real ground beef:
On top of the "beef" goes some nice grilled veggies- bell peppers, onion, and sweet corn straight off the cob.
Then comes the nacho "teese", followed by some lovely diced tomatoes and jalapenos.  And then, finally,
A little local crunch on top: CaJohn's stone ground tortilla strips!
The finished product.  Yum!  We'll be serving these up all weekend long at Pride Fest and Comfest, so bring your appetites with you down to Goodale Park this weekend and next!

Chicken of the Woods

I love mushrooms.  Of all kinds, shapes, colors, flavors, and sizes.  In Ohio & the midwest there is a nice abundance of variety of wild mushrooms, such as morels, pom poms, trumpets, and my favorite: Chicken of the Woods.
These big, bright, fleshy mushrooms are a type of "shelf" mushroom.  Because they grow on the sides of trees and resemble shelves.  When cut and sauteed in a pan, they taste JUST LIKE CHICKEN... and it's delicious on a pizza.
While perusing the local produce available at the Clintonville Co-Op this week, I found these gems and bought them.  ALL of them. So this week's special pizza will be a vegan BBQ chicken pizza. topped with these mushrooms, Annie's organic vegan BBQ sauce, grilled corn, red pepper, onion, and a sprinkling of Daiya vegan cheddar cheese.  This pizza is absolutely delicious, and will only be available while the mushrooms are.

Green on the Green & Green Business Practices

This Saturday, the pizza cart will be parked just up the road in Worthington for what is possibly Ohio's greenest festival of the year- Green on the Green.
Featuring more than 75 eco-friendly local vendors, Green on the Green has something for everyone: from rain barrels and compost worms to wine and beer making, you're bound to learn something if you come on Saturday.
The event takes place on the Village Green in Worthington, right in the center of town.  It runs from 9am until 2pm, and we'll be there with the pizza cart, as well as fair trade, organic coffee & lemonade.
I'm super excited to be a part of this festival!  For more details, check out the link:
Big Green Head: Green on the Green
In the process of building our food truck, we are continuing our efforts to be a green business:  The entire truck will be solar powered.  We've incorporated a lot of scrap metal & recycled materials into the building process. We've purchased almost all used equipment to keep from mining for raw materials.  Even on the outside, the truck design will be hand painted, using environmentally friendly paints.
Being green is not always easy: it's taken us a a little more time & hard work to finish the truck.  But good things are worth waiting for, and we're aiming for a Grand Opening in late June/ Early July. In the meantime, stop by our cart this weekend and enjoy some grilled pizza!
See you Saturday!

To Be or Not To Be Gluten-Free

There is a lot of buzz going on about gluten these days. According to wikipedia, only 1 in 105 people in the U.S. are affected by celiac's disease, however, it seems to be that people who aren't necessarily allergic to gluten are following a gluten free diet. Due to the large number of requests to make my pizzas gluten free, I decided to do some experimenting in attempt to make a glutenless pizza.
Gluten itself is a protein that gives dough its elasticity. As a baker, that elasticity in my pizza dough is vital to achieving a nice puffy crust, especially since I work entirely with whole grains and not refined white flour. Making my pizza dough gluten free has proven itself a challenge. Furthermore, since I grind my own flour, my entire kitchen is "contaminated" with gluten. In order for me to make pizza that would actually be "gluten-free," I would have to purchase all new equipment, and probably even find a new kitchen space.
Since it seems that most people who are following a gluten free diet may not necessarily have celiac's disease, I decided to make a crust that is "low-gluten", but not totally gluten free. This should be suitable for people who are avoiding gluten for health benefits, NOT for those who have gluten allergies.
This is a unique pizza crust in that it doesn't use yeast as a rising agent (yeast reacts with gluten in wheat, so wheat-free flour + yeast= flat hard bricks-at least in my experimenting.) Instead, this is a baking powder & butter crust made with a mixture of rye, spelt, and corn. While both rye and spelt do still contain gluten, it is significantly lower in content: rye has only about 2% gluten, corn is totally void of gluten, and spelt has a fragile gluten content, which makes it easier to digest than gluten in wheat.
Here are some good links. For those of you who are going gluten free because of the supposed health benefits, I encourage you to read up first.

http://www.wheat-free.org/wheat-free-flour.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluten-free_diet
http://www.ochef.com/108.htm

This week I will be featuring the new rye crust pizza, topped German-style with sauteed onions, sauerkraut, mushrooms, and swiss cheese. This particular pizza is fabulous with any good beer, and any person of true German heritage like myself will love it!
P.S. This pizza needs a name. Got any ideas? send me an email. If I like the name you'll also get a free pizza.

Fair Trade Pizza

Our pizzas just got even better!  In addition to fair trade sugar, we are now using fair trade, organic olive oil in our pizza crusts!  Not only are these olive oils making a better life for farmers and the environment, they're also making our pizzas taste even more delicious.  Canaan Fair Trade and Higher Grounds Trading Company both offer a nice selection of some of the best tasting olive oils you can find, made from the ancient olive trees of Palestine.  By using fair trade olive oils, we are helping to support a better life for small scale farmers around the world.  For more information on these olive oils, visit:

You can also pick up a fabulous bottle of these olive oils at any Global Gallery store, located at:
3535 N. High St
in Clintonville

in the Short North.
